Dr. Cavalcante, MD, PhD has considerable experience in conducting operational and clinical research on tuberculosis (TB) and HIV. She has participated in many international collaborative studies on TB and TB/HIV. She was the Principal Investigator in Brazil on two NIH-funded collaborative studies with Johns Hopkins University on innovative approaches for TB control. As the TB program coordinator for Rio de Janeiro for ten years, she had the opportunity to conduct many studies and lay the groundwork for research by building research capacity, providing opportunities for development of new investigators, and developing effective measures to implement and develop studies over time. She is also a member of the WHO technical development group for TB treatment and for latent TB infection treatment recommendations.
